A couple of monthly ago, my husband told me that a friend of his had a free Blue Apron order to give to a friend. Our friend orders Blue Apron a few times a month, and apparently, if you order Blue Apron fairly regularly, you are given free orders to share with your friends. Of course, we graciously accepted the free order! What an awesome gift!

What is Blue Apron?
Blue Apron is a meal delivery service that specializes in delivering high-quality, fresh food to your home. The meals are not pre-made, and the fresh ingredients are delivered to your door each week. There is no commitment, you can skip weeks easily and cancel at any time.
To order our meals, we went to BlueApron.com and clicked Sign-Up. After we entered our email and password, we were asked to pick a meal plan – the 2 Person Plan or the Family Plan. The 2 person plan will send you 3 different meals to serve 2 people. The Family plan will send you either 2 or 4 meals to serve 4 people. Even though we are a family of 4, we selected the 2 person plan. We were hoping this would give us a good idea of the variety of meals offered, plus we had no idea if our kids would eat it. You also have the ability to choose dietary restrictions by choosing or excluding certain foods such as beef, pork, fish, shellfish, etc.
Our order was delivered to our front door on a Saturday, and I must admit – it was exciting. Really, the whole family was a little giddy about receiving a box of food on the front porch. It was kind of like Christmas. For me, it was also a relief to know that 3 dinners were right there… delivered directly to me. I did not need to plan, shop, or select ingredients for 3 meals. I was pumped.
The shipping box was very sturdy and surprisingly, not too heavy. When we opened the box, we saw the silver insulated bag with the recipes on top.
After removing the recipes and opening the bag, we found the produce and seasoning ingredients. All of the produce look nice and fresh. We did not receive anything that was damaged, rotten or that even looked questionable. Everything looked great in our box.
Under the produce and seasonings was the chicken and beef in between two big ice packs. Even though the shipping box sat outside for a couple of hours, everything was still nice and cold. As a side note, you can keep or recycle the ice packs. We chose to keep the ice packs to re-use them, but included in the box are directions on how to recycle them.
After the box was completely unpacked, we sorted the ingredients by recipe. The ingredients were pre-packaged individually for each meal, so it was pretty simple. For example, two of our meal recipes called for green onion, so there were two separate bags of green onion in the box. This was nice and allowed me to store all the ingredients for one meal together in the fridge.
Cooking the Meals
Now for the fun part – what to cook first. We received ingredients to make Beef Tacos, Lemon Bucatini and West African Chicken. They all looked pretty good, and we decided to try out the tacos first.
The directions on the recipe cards are well-written, include beautiful pictures, and take you through all the prep before you actually start cooking. Even though the food arrives pre-packaged, it is not completely ready for cooking. We still had to chop, slice and dice to prep the food. It was not overwhelming, but worth mentioning if food prep is not your thing.
Once everything was prepped, we just followed the simple instructions to actually cook the meal. Again, everything was clearly written easy to follow. We were even excited to keep the recipe cards to remake the meals that we loved.
About the Meals
The meals are definitely restaurant quality. I personally have a hard time selecting recipes that use new or different vegetables. Blue Apron surprisingly helped me out with this. Our meals included radishes, butter lettuce, and kale. Three ingredients that I would typically not use on my own, but LOVED in these recipes.
For my husband and I, the portions were just right. We did not have much leftover though. If you are looking to feed more than 2 adults, I would definitely opt for the family plan.
Beef Tacos & Radish Salsa with Spicy Sweet Potato Wedges
The tacos were good, but neither my husband or myself would say they were great. That might be because we live in Texas. We prefer TexMex tacos 🙂 However, we L-O-V-E-D the spicy sweet potato wedges. Those were amazing, and we have since made them again.
West African Peanut Chicken with Sauteed Kale & Rice
This was a great dish that reminded me of my favorite Thai-fusion dish, Panang Chicken. The sauce on the chicken was great, and I even liked the sauteed kale! While my husband liked all the meals, he picked this one as his favorite. *This picture shows the meal plated with riced cauliflower instead of rice.
Meyer Lemon Bucatini with Marinated Radish & Butter Lettuce Salad
I was completely surprised by this dish. I usually don’t like lemon flavored items, butter lettuce or radishes. But, this meal was hands-down my favorite. The pasta was nice and thick, but balanced with a light buttery, lemon sauce. The salad though… Amazing. It is my new favorite salad. Something about the dressing made it a winner.
Should You Try Blue Apron?
If you are looking to try Blue Apron, I would consider the following:
Do you like to try new recipes? If so, the recipes we tried were great and so different than what we would normally make at home. You can even view their sample recipes by going to BlueApron.com and selecting “On the Menu” at the top of the page. Each entrée is clickable to show you more about that recipe. If you scroll down on that page, you can enter your email to receive a recipe each week.
Do you like to cook? If you like to cook or want to learn to cook, this is a super fun way to do it. If you don’t like to cook, sorry, this one is not for you.
Are you able to make the meals within a few days of receiving the box? This was my only concern after the box arrived. I felt a little pressured (by no one other than myself) to get the three meals made sooner rather than later. I am sure the produce would have been fine an extra 2 days in my fridge, but I did not want to risk it. We made the first meal the day we received the box, and the next two meals over the following 2 days. I know families are busy, and this is something to consider when deciding if or when to order your meals.
If timing is an issue, another option would be to order the family plan with 2 meals which gives you a little more time to get your meals cooked since you are making 1 less meal. You also have the option to pick and choose which weeks to receive your meals. If next couple weeks look busy, skip them. It is super easy to set-up online.

My Completely Honest Blue Apron Review
This is my completely honest Blue Apron review, and overall, I was very pleased with our Blue Apron meals and experience. It was fun to receive and fun to cook. The meals were diverse and included quality, wholesome ingredients. I even like Blue Apron’s desire to provide fresh ingredients while supporting farmers and sustainability efforts.
My husband and I had a lot of fun making these meals together. Cooking a Blue Apron meal would make a great date night at home. The recipes even include suggested wines to go with each dish or you can sign up for their monthly wine subscription box. I am also considering giving a Blue Apron box as a gift to members of my family. They all love to cook and would probably enjoying something a little different as a gift for birthdays and holidays.
I hope this Blue Apron review helped you decide if this would work well for your family. We will definitely be ordering Blue Apron again. Ordering once a week is out of our budget, but ordering once a month is a good fit for us. It gives us some variety with dinners, and gives me a little reprieve on meal planning once a month.
If you have any questions about our experience, feel free to ask in the comments. I would be happy to help!
